When it comes down to it, we really just want to feel good… And there’s nothing wrong with that! Maybe you’ve noticed, it’s my motto! 😉 But, what we usually mean by that is that we want to feel good within our bodies ~ we want to be healthy, well, and fit. We want to be able to take on anything we want with lots of energy, confidence, and enjoyment! We want to THRIVE!
Now that it’s Spring, we’re starting to gear up for summer ~ and that usually means lots of fun in the sun! Starting healthy habits NOW is the best way to get your body ready for all of the activity and enjoyment to come. Feeling good gives us the energy, confidence, and joyful experiences we long for AND it’s the energy, confidence, and enjoyment we want to fill our summers with!
Here are 5 easy things that you can do to feel good and thrive year round!
1. Eat Well
Your diet has EVERYTHING to do with how you feel. When you eat a diet full of processed/prepackaged foods, animal foods, toxins, chemicals, and other undesirable foodstuffs, you feel it. When you eat a diet full of fresh fruits and veggies, nuts, seeds, whole grains, and plant foods that are close to nature… you feel it, too!
Eating a diet rich in plant foods and diversity means you’re eating a diet rich in vitamins and minerals. Vitamins and minerals are essential to our health and wellbeing, meaning that they’re essential in order for us to feel good.
Your Action Step: Enjoy 3-4 pieces of fruit each day, 3-4 servings of veggies each day, and all of the leafy greens your heart desires! You can also switch out your bread for Ezekiel or an organic sprouted grain bread, switch your sodas to coconut water, enjoy beans 3-4 times per week and throw some nuts and seeds into your day!
Hydration, hydration, hydration!! Hydrate your body to keep it functioning optimally. You should be drinking water all day, every day. Water aids digestion, promotes healthy skin, helps your brain to function at its best, and improves almost every aspect of your body! You should be drinking a MINIMUM of 64 ounces per day or more, depending on your weight and lifestyle. Stay tuned for an upcoming article where I go into great detail about hydration ~ plus, it’s an excerpt from my new program, Fueled by Flora! (Click here for more information!)
Your Action Step: Fill a glass or aluminum water bottle up with fresh, clean water (I prefer distilled water), and keep it on you ALL DAY. Drink from your bottle throughout the day, and make sure to refill as many times as it takes to reach 64 ounces. Watch for my Hydration post to learn more about exactly how much water you should be drinking, why, and a few tips to drink more water!
We all know by now ~ exercise is inevitable if you want to lead a truly healthy lifestyle. You should be exercising for a MINIMUM of 15-20 minutes per day, 45-60 minutes of exercise per day is optimal. I know we don’t all have time for that every day, but doing a little is better than doing none at all.
ANYTHING can count as exercise ~ walking your dog, cleaning your house, doing yardwork, gardening, taking children to the park, going for a walk with friends, taking a short bike ride… Anything active is exercise. So hop to it!
Your Action Step: Make it a point to get 15-20 minutes of exercise per day. Push yourself to get 45-60 minutes at least 3 days per week. If the only time you have that much time is on the weekend, go for it! If the only way to do that is to involve your family or loved ones, make a day of it! Whatever you do, make time for YOU! Get your blood pumping, get your body moving and sweating, and enjoy every moment!
4. Practice Self Love
We all enjoy talking about how love makes the world go ’round – we talk about how important it is that we spread love and happiness… But sometimes we forget that that same love we spread should be shared with ourselves!
When you spend time loving yourself, you have more love to give.
If you don’t like thinking of it as “self love,” then think of it as self care. Caring for yourself keeps you healthy and well so that you can care for another.
Self love. Self care. All the same thing! So let’s practice a little every day!
Your Action Step: Do something for yourself every single day. This isn’t greedy, and it isn’t selfish, either. Care for yourself. Love yourself. This can be done through exercise, practicing positive self-talk, reading a book that inspires you, spending a little extra time cleaning your teeth (I know that sounds weird, but we often just brush and go!)… Anything that makes you feel good, cared for, and happy!
5. Find a Spiritual Practice
Okay, okay… Don’t freak out just yet! Spiritual doesn’t necessarily mean “religious” or “esoteric” (unless you’d like for it to ~ then, by all means, use that religious/spiritual practice for this step!).
When I say spiritual, I really just mean your inner self. You can also refer to this as your true self or your heart. However you want to look at it, finding a spiritual practice is about finding something that helps you to connect with your deepest self on a daily basis.
When we connect to our deepest self/inner self/true self/heart every day, we live our lives from a place of pure happiness and love. When we live from pure happiness and love, we feel GOOD! When we feel good, our healthy habits really begin to take effect… It’s all about feeling good and living well, and opening yourself up to the deepest part of yourself has a huge impact on your health. You’ll be less stressed, you’ll feel brighter and lighter, and you’ll begin to enjoy the little things in life (and not worry so much about the more challenging/difficult parts of your day).
Your Action Step: Do 1 thing every day to connect with your deepest self. This can be meditation, journaling, a period of reflection each morning, goal setting, planning the day ahead with the intention to live from your inner self, or even something fun like painting or drawing that allows you to escape and just enjoy spending time with yourself! (BONUS: A spiritual practice is also a self love practice! So, if you wish, you could combine your self care and your spiritual practice as a single practice!)
